Israeli archaeologists have unearthed the battle site where the Roman army breached the walls of Jerusalem nearly 2,000 years ago, reports the Times of Israel.
It was this very battle that caused the total destruction of Jerusalem and the desolation of the Second Temple, fulfilling the prophecy that Jesus gave during his earthly ministry, forty years before it happened. The day in which Jerusalem and the Second Temple would meet its destruction is also recorded in the book of Daniel Chapter 9.
As Jesus and the disciples assembled together on the Mt. of Olives, overlooking the Second Temple, he warned of the coming destruction to the city of Jerusalem and the Second Temple:
2 And Jesus said unto them, See ye not all these things? verily I say unto you, There shall not be left here one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down. 3 And as he sat upon the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world? -Matthew 24:2-3 (KJV).
The Gospel of Luke adds additional details:
20 And when ye shall see Jerusalem compassed with armies, then know that the desolation thereof is nigh. -Luke 21:20 (KJV).

The prophecy of the destruction was fulfilled on the 10th of August, in A.D. 70 – the 9th of Av- the very day when the King of Babylon burned the First Temple in 586 B.C., the Second Temple was also burned again. Forty years after Jesus’ death and resurrection, just as Jesus prophesied, and on the exact day that Daniel had said, Jerusalem lie in ruins and the temple in desolation. Because the non-believing Jews are forbidden to read the book of Daniel, they cannot share in this joyous revelation. However, without a doubt, the MESSIAH for which they looked and did not recognize, came and went, and is COMING AGAIN! Eventually at a later time, in God’s perfect timing, all of this will be understood in absolute certainty to the Jews.
After the Romans penetrated the walls, they conquered and besieged the city of Jerusalem, and although Titus did not order the destruction to the Second Temple, the Romans were so angry with the Jewish people, they torched the Second Temple. After setting fire to the Temple, gold began dripping between the stones. The gold and other treasures had been placed at the temple for safekeeping. Seeing the gold melting between the stones, the Roman soldiers tore apart each stone to get to the liquefying gold (Source: Temple Mount); fulfilling the exact words of JESUS as told to us in Matthew 24:2: “There shall not be left here one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down.”
The Romans pillaged the site further, taking the Menorah and other valuable Jewish artifacts back to Rome. To this day, the stolen goods from the Second Temple are believed to be at the Vatican, and a request for the items to be returned was sent to Pope Francis.
The discovery of the battle site, unearthed last winter during an excavation of a construction site for the new campus of the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design outside the Old City, also confirms the events as recorded by Jewish historian Flavius Josephus, who present during the battle, also famously recorded his eyewitness accounts to the destruction of Jerusalem and the Second Temple in The Wars of the Jews. Josephus’ account helped identify the exact location of the wall that was breached and was significant for the confirmation.
The Israeli Antiquities Authority reports the following.
During the dig, the archaeologists found the remains of a tower surrounded by scores of stones and boulders fired by Roman catapults at the Jewish forces guarding the wall, the Israel Antiquities Authority said in a statement.
“This is a fascinating testimony of the intensive bombardment by the Roman army, led by Titus, on their way to conquering the city and destroying the Second Temple,” the statement said
“The bombardment was intended to attack the sentries guarding the wall and provide cover for the Roman forces so they could approach the wall with battering rams and thereby breach the city’s defenses,” it said.
The part of the wall that was breached was known as the Third Wall. It was found in the area of modern Jerusalem known as the Russian Compound. According to accounts by Josephus, this part of the wall was designed to protect a new quarter of the city that developed outside the other two existing walls.
For much of the 20th century, scholars have been debating the route of this Third Wall and “the question concerning Jerusalem’s boundaries on the eve of the Roman onslaught,” the statement said. “It seems that the new discovery in the Russian Compound is proof of the wall’s existence in this area.”
In his “The War of the Jews,” Josephus describes the wall as follows:
“… the beginning of the third wall was at the tower Hippicus, whence it reached as far as the north quarter of the city, and the tower Psephinus …It was Agrippa who encompassed the parts added to the old city with this wall, which had been all naked before.”
The Third Wall had been completed as part of preparations by the Jews for the Great Revolt against Rome that began in 66 CE and ended in 70 CE when the Romans breached the walls of Jerusalem and destroyed the Second Temple. Hundreds of thousands of Jews were killed, and heralded the start of nearly two thousand years of exile.
The excavation findings will be presented in a conference at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem later this month, Times of Israel reports.
The news comes after the recent decision of UNESCO, who declared the Temple Mount and Western wall were Muslim. The resolution draft, passed last Thursday by UNESCO, described Israel as “the occupying power” and referred to the site by the Muslim name only, essentially erasing Jewish ties to the Holy Site. The resolution was then ratified by UNESCO’s executive on Tuesday.
I am calling this discovery a DIVINE INTERVENTION and WARNING. It is not so much because of the discovery, because I believe what the bible tells us, but THE TIMING. It is as though Jesus is reminding us of who is in charge of Israel. As I read this article, all of the prophecies flooded my mind, the coming tribulation, the birth pangs Jesus told us about, and the timetable recorded in Daniel.
The fulfillment of Christ’s prophecy regarding the destruction of the Second Temple not only reveals the year of Christ’s crucifixion, but reflects the fulfillment of God’s plan for the salvation of all humanity.
For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. -Romans 1:16 (KJV).
It is important to point out that the Jews were not the only ones who did not recognize the Messiah, many others then AND today do not either. We must understand this was all ordained by GOD, his written plan, our salvation, was brought through this revelation.
That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith. -Galatians 3:14 (KJV).
Why is this time in history so important? Because it ushered in another plan of GOD -the fullness of the Gentiles to come in, because remember it was SIN that caused the crucifixion of JESUS, not the unbelieving Jews. WE HAVE TO DISMANTLE the hatred and the false views of Israel, and understand GOD’S PLAN that was set in motion, the grafting in of the Gentiles. Paul was commissioned for this very purpose, he writes:
For I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this mystery (secret), lest ye should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in. -Romans 11:25 (KJV).
Of utmost importance is the promises JESUS made to Israel. Scripture tells us that they would be saved when God, at a future time will deal with Israel, we know this biblically as the time of Jacob’s trouble. Jesus also told us that he would restore the nation of Israel, and bring the people to their own land. We have been witnessing parts of those prophecies being fulfilled already, as the nation of Israel was created on May 14, 1948, and since this time, the Jewish people have been returning to their land.
While the sovereignty of Israel is threatened by all the nations, we know that JESUS will once again move his hand! Scripture tells of trouble unparalleled to anything in history is yet to come, but we also know that JESUS is coming to restore the hearts of the descendants of Jacob, the heirs of Israel and the land. The NATION of ISRAEL and the descendants of Jacob are so important to GOD, because it is through Israel, both the seed and land, that GOD will manifest his power! I am moved beyond words at this revelation. It means that the last phase of God’s plan is yet to come—Christ’s imminent return to abolish and destroy evil, and rule the earth!
As a side note, It should be pointed out that while the Jews yearn to build the Third Temple, attempts that were made were met with “fire and brimstone.” The following was reported by Temple Mount:
There was one occasion after the destruction of the Second Temple when the Jews were able to formulate plans to rebuild their temple. The man behind this project was the Roman Emperor, Flavius Claudius Julianus, a nephew of Constantine – also known as Julian the Apostate because of his opposition to Christianity. Julian planned the project in the last year of his reign in A.D. 363. From far and wide, Jews came to Jerusalem to help in the rebuilding work. Julian supplied the necessary funds and appointed Alypius of Antioch, the Roman Governor of Great Britain, to carry out the project. Jews from all over gave from their wealth upon the projected work of rebuilding the Temple. The roads to Jerusalem were filled with multitudes of Jewish men and women who had hopes of seeing a Third Temple built.
Then sudden tragedy struck. The foundations of the Second Temple were barely uncovered when flames of fire burst forth from under the ground. The flames were accompanied by large explosions. The cause for the flames were probably the result of noxious gas in the subterranean passages catching fire. The workmen fled and the building was stopped, never again to be restarted. Many believed that the explosion and fire were a demonstration of the anger of God.
With their hopes dashed, the Jews were then driven into Exile and became wanderers in foreign lands. They were people without a homeland. For some eighteen centuries they would be dispersed and persecuted. Throughout time their thoughts were of the Temple which once stood in Jerusalem and prayers for its restoration.
An inspiration of HOPE. Telling us once again, that all things happen according to GOD’S TIMETABLE and that IT IS GOD, NOT MAN, that IS IN CONTROL OF ISRAEL! But there is more to be understood here, because, GOD chose Israel to manifest this power! Paul explains it to us in Romans 9.
Continue to pray for the land and people of Israel. Continue to pray for all the lost who JESUS wants to bring into his kingdom, we are so close to the “sealing up of the prophecies.”
