Excavations Near the Sea of Galilee Uncover Evidence of Where Jesus Miraculously Cast Out Legions of Demons Into a Herd of Pigs

28 And when he was come to the other side into the country of the Gergesenes, there met him two possessed with devils, coming out of the tombs, exceeding fierce, so that no man might pass by that way. 29 And, behold, they cried out, aying, What have we to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of God? art thou come hither to torment us before the time? 30 And there was a good way off from them an herd of many swine feeding. 31 So the devils besought him, saying, If thou cast us out, suffer us to go away into the herd of swine. 32 And he said unto them, Go. And when they were come out, they went into the herd of swine: and, behold, the whole herd of swine ran violently down a steep place into the sea, and perished in the waters.33 And they that kept them fled, and went their ways into the city, and told every thing, and what was befallen to the possessed of the devils.34 And, behold, the whole city came out to meet Jesus: and when they saw him, they besought him that he would depart out of their coasts. – Matthew 8:28-34 (KJV).

During previous excavations, a large monastery and church were discovered, lending further credence that this is the location of the miracles performed by Jesus as recorded in scripture.

The existence of an ancient settlement at the site, on the northeastern coast of the Sea of Galilee, was already known in the 1960s, when the remains of a large pier were discovered below sea level. Later, a short distance away, the remains of a city were found, whose main characteristics made it appear like a Byzantine Christian site. The entire complex became a national park in 1980, and was given the name Kursi, after a nearby Syrian village. The sharp drop in the water level of the Sea of Galilee allowed researchers to return to the location of the breakwater, and after intensive work they realized that the ancient harbor is much bigger than they had thought, and may even be a separate settlement. They were surprised to find there a 59.05 by 27.6 inches marble tablet, with an Aramaic inscription in Hebrew letters.

It is believed that the Hebrew inscription were engraved sometime in 500 CE, and according to researchers, there was a Jewish settlement in the area before the town evolved into a “mixed town,” The Jewish Press reported.

“The existence of a Jewish settlement on the eastern shores of the Sea of Galilee is a very rare thing. Until now we had no proof that Jewish settlements, which have disappeared over the years, actually existed during that period on the shores of the Sea of Galilee, except for the town of Migdal,” said Prof. Artzi.

In addition to the testimony of a Jewish roots existence, the tablet is unique in other ways: Besides being the first of its kind to be found in Israel, it is the first ever inscription on a slab of marble, specially commissioned from Greece. Most inscription tablets of that period were made of mosaic.  The inscription is thought to have been at the entrance to an interior room in a synagogue.

“The dedication comprises eight lines, so that it is very detailed or expansive. In most cases we do not find so many words in Hebrew letters engraved on stone, so the person to whom the inscription was dedicated must have had a tremendous influence on the local people,” Artzy said, according to Science Daily.

The marble bore the words “marmaria,” “amen,” “the holy king” and “the merciful,” the Times of Israel reported.

The marble inscription is believed to be associated with a synagogue, perhaps bearing a common dedicatory script, according to Haggai Misgav, a Hebrew University expert in ancient inscriptions, via the Times.

University of Haifa archaeologist Haim Cohen said “marmaria” could have two meanings, a type of marble or a reference to “the rabbi of Mary.”

“Mar” means rabbi; the marble could refer to Mary, Jesus’ mother, or Jesus himself, though the slab is unlikely to referemce Christianity, Misgav suggested.

Writing about the significance of the site to Christians, Charles R. Page of the Jerusalem Institute for Biblical Exploration said, “This area is the first place in the Gentile world to be exposed to the teachings of Jesus. Jesus’ first Gentile convert was the demoniac of Gergesa (see Matthew 8, Mark 5, Luke 8). He later became the first Christian, Gentile evangelist (Mark 8).

“Therefore, this place had and has tremendous importance for Gentile Christians,” Page said on the website for the Kursi excavation project.

The excavations have yielded significant insights into the Byzantine and the earlier Jewish town, especially the marble inscription. “There is no parallel for such a detailed and expensive dedication in archeological findings to date in Israel,” said Artzy.

The Sea of Galilee, is home to many stories mentioned in the bible, including many miracles performed by Jesus during his earthly ministry.  The lake itself has also been the cause of many Arab-Israeli wars.

The Sea of Galilee is known to us by four different names in scripture: Sea of Galilee, Kinneret (The “Sea of Chinnereth” or “Cinneroth,” or by the modern Hebrew name, Kinneret), Lake of Gennesaret, and Lake Tiberias. This is the largest freshwater lake in Israel, and serves as the primary source of drinking water for all of Israel today.

  1. “Galilee” (Matthew 4:18; 15:29)
  2. The “Sea of Chinnereth,” or “Chinneroth” in Hebrew means “harp-shaped” (Numbers 34:11; Joshua 12:3; 13:27)
  3. The “lake of Gennesaret” (Luke 5:1)
  4. The “Sea of Tiberias” (John 6:1; 21:1)

Much of Jesus’ ministry was spent in regions on or around the Sea of Galilee.  18 of the 33 recorded miracles of Jesus took place in the immediate vicinity of the Sea Galilee, with 10 being recorded in the city of Capernaum alone.(Matthew 4:18, 15:29, Mark 1:16; 7:31, John 6:1).

Water Wars

In 1964, Syria attempted construction of a Headwater Diversion Plan that would have blocked the flow of water into the Sea of Galilee, sharply reducing the water flow into the lake.  This project and Israel’s attempt to block these efforts in 1965 were factors which spurred tensions that finally resulted in the 1967 Six-Day War. Following the war,  Israel successfully captured the Golan Heights, which contain some of the sources of water for the Sea of Galilee (WIkepedia).

The capture of the Ancient Heights (Golan Heights), was also prophesied in the book of Ezekiel.

We are blessed and enriched to know that our HOLY LAND, where JESUS walked has many stories and much to share. All of these discoveries confirm scripture and reveal the ALMIGHTY PRESENCE OF JESUS!  They are blessings and prophetic events, ones that should be carefully examined and understood. I believe they are indeed our Heavenly Father speaking to us!

It is the glory of God to conceal a thing: but the honour of kings is to search out a matter. – Proverbs 25:2 (KJV).

Not that we need archaeological finds to back up biblical accounts, because we believe GOD by our Faith and his WORD, but it is awesome when archaeological discoveries continue to prove the bible true. For me, they bring the BIBLE to life!

What is even more inspiring about the “miracle of the swine” is that it reminds us, that JESUS is in complete control of everything. In all of his recorded miracles, from commanding the waters to be still, to causing the demons to flee, we are given a STRONG and POWERFUL revelation of JESUS’ authority over heaven and earth! There is so much peace in knowing that.

We see the same fear of those demons that fled the two men JESUS healed in the world today. Why do you think CHRISTIANITY is the most persecuted religion!  THE DEVIL KNOWS how real and powerful our ALMIGHTY GOD IS!

Did you notice in that passage that the demons instantly recognized JESUS?

29 And, behold, they cried out, saying, What have we to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of God? art thou come hither to torment us before the time? -Matthew 8:29 (KJV).

Those demons trembled at JESUS’ mere presence, they knew that JESUS had full authority and power over them, that he would execute judgment, and they knowing their ultimate destiny, the lake of fire, begged to be cast into the herd of pigs rather than face that judgment!. We should both revel and fear that JESUS has full authority to judge all those on earth!  This story of the swine also serves to confirm just how real the demonic world is!  Something that we cannot ignore, but take caution never to fear or entertain them!

For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. – Ephesians 6:12 (KJV).

We as SPIRIT filled CHRISTIANS, have through JESUS CHRIST, the authority over the powers of darkness. James confirms that:

Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. -James 4:7 (KJV).

This story testifies that SPIRITS can only live where they are welcome, where JESUS is not present! Therefore, there is no stronghold, no sin that WE through the power of JESUS CHRIST, the KING of both the physical and spiritual world, CANNOT OVERCOME. It is up to us, to exercise that power, through JESUS CHRIST!  IT is JESUS that rescues us from the power of darkness and restores us. Amen.

10 To the intent that now unto the principalities and powers in heavenly places might be known by the church the manifold wisdom of God, 11 According to the eternal purpose which he purposed in Christ Jesus our Lord:12 In whom we have boldness and access with confidence by the faith of him.13 Wherefore I desire that ye faint not at my tribulations for you, which is your glory. – Ephesians 3:10-13 (KJV).
