Egremni Beach on the Greek Island of Lefkada was known as one of the world’s most beautiful beaches. It was also a favorite beach among locals, too. Drawing many because of its sprawling crystal-clear waters and gorgeous scenery. But now the entire beach, which was once occupied by tourists and local sunbathers, has vanished. An earthquake registering at 6.1 magnitude on the Richter scale has completely changed the landscape of the entire area.
The earthquake, which struck on Tuesday morning, November 17, killed two people and spurred landslides in numerous places. Extensive damage to roads and buildings on Lefkada and the nearby islands was also reported. The tremors, which were felt across most of Greece, prompted residents to rush out into the streets.
The Athens Geodynamic Institute said the undersea quake had a preliminary magnitude of 6.1 and occurred at 9:10 a.m. (0710 GMT) off Greece’s western mainland, 300 kilometers (186 miles) west of Athens. The U.S. Geological Survey put the preliminary magnitude at 6.5. Different agencies often have varying preliminary magnitudes in the hours and sometimes even days after a quake.
Greek authorities were struggling to assess the damage, their efforts hampered by landslides that blocked Lefkada’s narrow, mountainous roads.
Then the earth shook and trembled; the foundations also of the hills moved and were shaken, because he was wroth – Psalm 18:7 (KJV).
The fire department said an 82-year-old woman was killed in the village of Athani when a wall collapsed on her and a 69-year-old woman died in another village when a boulder loosened by the earthquake tumbled down onto her house. Four people were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.
State ERT TV said part of the harbor of Vassiliki in the worst-hit southwestern part of the island was submerged in the sea. Schools were closed on both Lefkada and Kefalonia.
Authorities said several houses were badly damaged on Kefalonia and another nearby island, Ithaca.
And great earthquakes shall be in divers places, and famines, and pestilences; and fearful sights and great signs shall there be from heaven. -Luke 21:11 (KJV).
The beautiful Egremni beach, was also hit hard, it was completely buried under debris due to the deadly earthquake that rattled the island of Lefkada.
The violent shaking ignited a landslide, causing large boulders and swaths of rubble to detach from the mountain and plunge to the beach below, in what onlookers described as a “sandstorm and a cloud of billowing dust.” The aftermath of the island and beach is nothing short of a total devastation.
Thomas Verykios, a fishermen, whose boat was just offshore when the island began to shake, captured the moment the large landslide rumbled and gained momentum.
When the tremors started, Verykios wasn’t sure what to make of it, he told ABC.
“I wasn’t too sure what that noise was. I thought it was the boat motor,” he said.
When he realized what was happening, he decided to document it.
“I was shocked, and then I thought to myself, ‘I better get the phone out to show the family,'” he said.
Verykios said witnessing the effect of the quake on the sand was awe-inspiring.
“It was one of the most spectacular things that I’ve ever seen,” he said.
Aftershocks were also hitting the area — including one with a 5.2 magnitude more than an hour after the main quake. Ionian Islands regional governor Theodoros Galiatsatos called on residents to avoid any structures that appeared damaged until authorities could assess their safety.
Earthquakes are common in Greece, which is one of the world’s most seismically active areas, though serious injuries and deaths are rare. A severe quake near Athens in 1999 killed 143 people and caused extensive damage through the Greek capital.
The Ionian region is particularly seismically active, and new buildings on the area’s islands are constructed to strict anti-seismic standards. Kefalonia was struck by a series of strong earthquakes, two of them with magnitudes of around 6, in January 2014, causing damage and minor injuries but no fatalities.
Those temblors awakened memories of catastrophic 1953 quakes that flattened nearly all the island’s structures, killing hundreds of people.
God is trying to get the attention of unbelievers…his message is clear, and he is not ashamed to take ownership of the destructions and calamities! All of these horrible events are nothing in comparison to a lifetime in hell. Consider them a mercy warning. On a grand and global scale, many have forgotten GOD and have been narcissistically focused on their own business, instead of “our father’s business.”
And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed – Romans 13:11 (KJV).
God is speaking. God is calling the lost people everywhere to himself. It is my prayer, that people will begin to hear that call on a national level and take heed, so that future calamities could be averted. God does not wish any man to perish. Just as Jonah preached to the Ninevites and they repented and God lovingly responded:
And God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God repented of the evil, that he had said that he would do unto them; and he did it not – Jonah 3:10 (KJV).
If there be any person unsaved who reads this, please see these phenomenal events as God’s way of speaking to us, warning us. He has always used natural events to get our attention. He is doing this because he is merciful, and wants to help us, so we can see our dependence on him, to save us! Only Jesus can help us – only Jesus can sustain and deliver us.
Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid – John 14:27 (KJV).
Say to them that are of a fearful heart, Be strong, fear not: behold, your God will come with vengeance, even God with a recompence; he will come and save you. Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf shall be unstopped – Isaiah 35: 4-5 (KJV).
