The Satanic Temple of Seattle announced that a 12th-grader at Bremerton High School has requested the group join the coach’s prayer circle after the next game, on Thursday, to perform a satanic invocation.
Which goes something like this:
“Let us stand now, unbowed and unfettered by arcane doctrines born of fearful minds. Let us embrace the Luciferian impulse to eat of the Tree of Knowledge and dissipate our comforting delusions of old.
“That which will not bend must break, and that which can be destroyed by truth should never be spared its demise. It is done. Hail Satan.”
That text was emailed to Seattle Times by Lilith Starr, temple chapter head.
The Satanic Temple, which has 45 members in its Seattle chapter, announced that its members were open to being invited to a game. The group’s website describes their beliefs an “Atheist group that rejects the notion of supernatural deities and espouses values such as scientific inquiry and compassion.”
The group suggested that by allowing the coach to continue praying, the district has created a forum for religious expression open to all groups. It requested permission to perform an invocation on the field after the game. The district had not responded as of Wednesday and did not respond to a request for comment regarding the group.
“If they are creating an open public forum for religious expression, on the 50-yard line, then they have to make it open to all,” Starr said.
She added she’d heard there’s also interest in coming to the game “from the pagans, and some Buddhists. But that’s it for now.”
Abe Bartlett, the school’s senior class president, answered the Satanists’ call.
“Coach Kennedy has expressed an interest in filing a lawsuit against the school district, and I think that was crossing a line – we’re a low-income school district,” Bartlett, 17, told AP. “But the main reason I did it is to portray to the school district that I think we should either have a policy that we’re not going to have any religious affiliation or public religious practices, or they should say people are going to be allowed to practice their religion publicly whatever their beliefs.”
Lilith Starr, chapter head of the Satanic Temple of Seattle, previewed the demonstration in a radio interview on KIRO, saying they were planning a “strong, theatrical, political call to stand up for the beliefs we believe in.”

“If the church-state separation is breached, we really don’t think it’s right for the state to be promoting one religion over the other,” she said. “We really want to make the point that this is not just a Christian forum. If it’s going to be open, it’s going to be open to everyone, including us.”
Coach Kennedy’s attorneys from the Texas-based Liberty Institute dispute the claim that Kennedy’s prayers automatically turn the field into a public venue, pointing out the prayers are silent.
Starr and her fellow Satanists do not plan on being silent, with the organization telling The Friendly Atheist blog, “We’re going to be in black robes, heads covered like Sith Lords. If Joe Kennedy starts to pray, we will begin our solemn march accompanied by a gong to the 50 yard line in a V-formation, with Lilith in front. She will have an incense burner in each extended arm. When we get to the 50 yard line, she hands the incense off to people behind her and begins the invocation… With each sentence the gong will ring.”
“The invocation will likely end with a repeating ‘Ava Satanas!’ (Hail Satan) lead by Lilith.”
Kennedy has vocally engaged in pregame and postgame prayers, sometimes joined by students, since 2008. But the practice recently came to the district’s attention, and it asked him to stop.
Despite orders from the school district to stop praying, Coach Joe Kennedy refused to comply with the order, citing religious freedom. He was placed on paid administrative leave Wednesday by the school district.
Kennedy’s lawyers garnered 47 signatures from US congressmen on a petition letter to the Bremerton School District, claiming that Kennedy’s religious liberty was being violated by the high school’s demand he quit. Co-chairs of the Congressional Prayer Caucus, Rep. Randy Forbes (R-Virginia) and Sen. James Lankford (R-Oklahoma) led the effort in signing the letter.
“The Establishment Clause exists to ensure that the government cannot affirmatively impose or elevate one religion over another,” it reads. “However, it does not prohibit the government from referencing religion altogether, nor does it require that government officials proactively scrub all references of religion from the public square.”
Bremerton School District officials said in a statement that assistant football coach Joe Kennedy’s leave was necessitated because of his refusal to comply with district directives that he refrain from engaging in overt, public religious displays on the football field while on duty as a coach.
“While the district appreciates Kennedy’s many positive contributions to the BHS football program, and therefore regrets the necessity of this action, Kennedy’s conduct poses a genuine risk that the District will be liable for violating the federal and state constitutional rights of students or others. For this reason, Kennedy will not be allowed to further violate the District’s directives,” the statement said.
He initially agreed to the ban, but then, with support from the Texas-based Liberty Institute, a religious-freedom organization, he resumed the postgame prayers, silently taking a knee for 15 to 20 seconds at midfield after shaking hands with the opposing coaches. His lawyers insist he is not leading students in prayer, just praying himself.
On Wednesday night, Kennedy’s lawyer, Hiram Sasser, called the paid leave a hostile employment action.
“It’s surprising and shocking,” Sasser said.
He said they plan to file a charge of discrimination with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, which he said is a next step.
The controversy has focused attention on Bremerton, across the Puget Sound west of Seattle, and on the role of religion in public schools. On Tuesday, dozens of lawmakers in the Congressional Prayer Caucus sent a letter to the superintendent expressing support for the coach.
But there’s good practical reason why the Bremerton School District begged him not to. And that reason has now arrived — bearing the form of Satan.
These arguments over religion in public schools have been waged in public numerous times. The outcome is always the same, the seculars win by pushing out Christianity, or threatening to have all religions welcome. The injustices are ironic. Especially considering that schools are allowed to teach about Islam, take field trips to Mosques, and requires students to memorize the Muslim conversion prayer, along with writing: “there is no god but allah,” constituted as legal learning. Meanwhile, Christianity is not taught, nor is Creationism. They get away with such things because instead of being classified under religion, the schools deceptively categorize it as “Social Studies.”
Regardless of what happens, the truth is, if we continue allowing Christians to pray, under the law, the school has every obligation to honor all religions. Can you imagine?
That’s why the Bremerton School District wants the coach to stop. Not because it’s being anti-Christian or politically correct. It’s because the alternative is an unmanageable free-for-all.
I don’t know, but I too could imagine the scene, just picture it. The game ends and is followed by the Muslim call to prayer. The Christians form their prayer circle at midfield. The pagans sacrifice a goat. The Satanists burn pentagrams onto the 35-yard line.
We are in a spiritual battle, indeed, the works of darkness, the mystery of iniquity is coming out from behind the curtains.
God help us all.

Here is a copy of Lillith’s Letter to the School District:
This the letter we sent to the Bremerton High principal staff this morning. We have yet to hear back, the Satanic Temple wrote on their facebook page.
Dear Bremerton High School Principal and Assistant Principals,
In light of football coach Joe Kennedy’s public prayer on the Bremerton High football field at the October 18 game, The Satanic Temple of Seattle requests permission to also perform a public Satanic invocation on the football field after the next football game, at the behest of a Bremerton High student.
Since Kennedy has continued to pray with no consequences, we recognize that the school has now effectively opened up the field at school events as a public forum for religion.
One of your students has contacted us and requested that their beliefs, which align with ours, are represented equally on the field. We would like to honor their request at the next possible opportunity, the football game this Thursday, October 29. We have an invocation prepared and stand ready with Satanic clergy to perform it.
We appreciate that you have already ruled that coach Kennedy’s continued prayers violate the separation of church and state. However, he has challenged this ruling and refused to comply with your order to stop, while as yet facing no consequences.
We would like to learn your position on Kennedy’s claim that he is legally entitled to religious accommodation.
If you have in fact now decided to allow him to continue praying publicly with no consequences, we respect your decision in opening school events to religious activities, and we ask that you also honor our request to perform a Satanic invocation in that same open forum.
As I am sure you are aware, if the line between church and state is breached and religion allowed into school events, those events must be open to all faiths equally, including not only Christianity but Buddhism, Judaism, atheism, Islam, Satanism, and any other belief system. Religious accommodation must be granted to all. Otherwise the school will be in violation of federal law.
The Satanic Temple will be at the game ready to perform the invocation at the same time as coach Kennedy’s prayer, as requested by the student.
If you prevent coach Kennedy from praying or discipline or discharge him appropriately, we will withdraw our request to perform the Satanic Invocation.
If you deny our request while allowing coach Kennedy to continue performing his public prayers, we would like to understand your rationale for exclusively promoting one faith over another.
Please reply to our request at your earliest convenience.
