This Atheist ‘Minister’ Rejects God, the Bible, and Jesus as the Son of God, Yet Fights to Remain “Testi-lying” at ‘Christian’ Church

TORONTO — An ordained minister with the United Church of Canada is resisting efforts to oust her from the pulpit because she is an atheist.  Just one year after Reverend Gretta Vosper was ordained by the United Church of Canada, taking a vow that God was the “Father, Son, and Holy Spirit,” she stopped believing altogether.

And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world. – 1 John 4:3 (KJV).

Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son.- 1 John 2:22 (KJV).

Gretta Vosper

“I don’t believe in … the god called God,” Said Grospe. “Using the word gets in the way of sharing what I want to share.”

She said that she believes the Bible is “mythology,” and denies that Jesus is the Son of God.

“We build a faith tradition upon it which shifted to find belief more important than how we lived,” Vosper said.

It was 1994 and Vosper’s young daughter Hazel’s favorite teacher had just died from a brain tumor. Hazel was devastated, and furious at her mother who had recently taught her in Sunday school that if you prayed the right way, everyday, God would answer and he could heal. Clearly, it hadn’t worked.

“I was so humiliated that I had actually said that and that Hazel felt her teacher hadn’t gotten well because she hadn’t prayed properly,” Vosper, 57, recently told VICE News from her West Hill United Church congregation outside of Toronto. “When I heard that coming from her, I realized it was an abhorrent thing to suggest.”

For the next few years, Vosper kept her doubts under wraps and went on to lead a large congregation. But a few years later, she cracked.

Vosper, 57, and who was ordained in 1993, first came out as an atheist in 2001.

Vosper stood up in front of her congregation, as usual. But instead of a normal sermon, she declared that she no longer believed in God. “Something came over me, and I took God apart,” she recalled. “I said I didn’t believe in an interventionist God, not a God that was a Being, I didn’t believe in Supernatural powers, or Heaven or Hell…My understanding of God is more about relationships with oneself, the others, and the planet.”

However, her congregation still supported her until 2008 when she sought to do away with the use of the Lord’s Prayer and lost approximately 100 members of her 150-member congregation.

Earlier this year, Vosper wrote an open letter asserting that a belief in God can compel people to commit evil, referencing the Charlie Hebdo massacre in France.

And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold- Matthew 24:12 (KJV).

United Church of Canada

“That didn’t go over well,” Vosper, who also founded the Canadian Centre for Progressive Christianity, told reporters. “[But] if we are going to continue to use language that suggests we get our moral authority from a supernatural source, any group that says that can trump any humanistic endeavour.”

Much to her surprise, neither the congregation nor the church board were bothered by this. Many even confessed that they, too, had their doubts. And so they carried on, without God.

I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel:Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ. But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed- Galatians 1:6-8 (KJV).

But now, the church’s top brass say they’ve received too many complaints about Vosper and have launched an unprecedented investigation to determine whether she’s fit to keep her job. Vosper is appealing the church’s general secretary decree issued in May that lays out a plan to kick her out — also known as “defrocking.” Both sides have lawyered up for an ecclesiastical court hearing slated for September.

It’s a surprising turn of events, especially since the United Church is known for its progressive views about who can join the fold and who can lead — it was one of the first to welcome women and LGBTQ folks to the cloth. Vosper says she’s going to fight to keep her job in the church not only because she loves the community, but also to stand up for her many colleagues she says also don’t believe, but are too scared to admit it openly.

Canada, which launched an investigation into her “effectiveness” as a minister. In May, Nora Sanders, general secretary for the UCC General Council, provided the denomination with standards on which to determine whether Vosper should stay or go.

“In my opinion, a person who is not suitable for ministry in the United Church cannot be ‘effective’ as United Church ministry personnel,” she wrote.

Gretta Vosper

“Do you believe in God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, and do you commit yourself anew to God?” and “Do you believe that God is calling you to the ordained ministry of Word, Sacrament and Pastoral Care, and do you accept this call?” are expected to be among the questions asked to determine her fitness for service.

Now, Vosper is fighting the motion to review her effectiveness as well as Sander’s standards.

“We … must submit our arguments regarding the appeal by September 18th,” she told the Christian Post.

In the meantime, Vosper has refused to repent of her atheism.

“If the cost of that is that we are no longer welcome within that denomination, it will be because that denomination has defined us out of it, not because we have defined ourselves out of it,” she said.

Her appeal is scheduled to be heard this fall.  Vosper knows many might find the idea of an atheist minister confusing, even impossible.

My heart broke as I read this article about Gretta.  The tragedy in her life that caused her to fall away, because God did not heal someone close to her.  She is not the first.  I imagine she was angry and misinformed about the nature of God. She has clearly been misled by the false health and wealth teachings that have led so many Christians astray. This is why it is important to have a pesonal relationship with JESUS, and not rely on the teachings of man, or ourselves!

That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men,and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive; – Ephesians 4:14 (KJV).

Does God always Heal?

God does not always heal, no matter how much we ask him. I wondered if she had also been taught that bad things only happen to those who are out of God’s grace, another false gospel than runs rampant. After we become Christians it is not biblical, or even practical to think that evil and suffering are removed from our lives. In fact, the scripture shows us just the opposite is true.  Repeatedly we are shown that we should expect to experience trials and persecution, and it has nothing to do with sin, or how bad we are!

Confirming the souls of the disciples, and exhorting them to continue in the faith, and that we must through much tribulation enter into the kingdom of God. – Acts 14: 22 (KJV).

Sadly, some churches teach that sickness or lack of money, or whatever bad circumstances are a result of “sin or a lack of faith.”  I can only imagine if she was subjected to those false teachings.I know by what she expressed, anger played a major role in her falling away, too.   She needs someone, other than her apostate church, who placed another stumbling block in her way, to reach out to her.

But have renounced the hidden things of dishonesty, not walking in craftiness, nor handling the word of God deceitfully; but by manifestation of the truth commending ourselves to every man’s conscience in the sight of God.- 2 Corinthians 4:2 (KJV).

I said a prayer for Gretta, and I hope that whatever pain or anger she feels, that she will return to God.  However, the truth is, her removal is not only needed from the pulpit,(according to scripture, a woman is not permitted to head a church see 1 Timothy 2:12) but she needs to remove herself from that apostate church (allowing gays and gay clergy, amongst other things that are not biblical).

Brethren, if any of you do err from the truth, and one convert him; Let him know, that he which converteth the sinner from the error of his way shall save a soul from death, and shall hide a multitude of sins. -James 5:19-20 (KJV).

God Does Heal

I do believe that God heals, and the bible is filled with stories about the lame leaping, the blind seeing, demonic spirits cast out, lepers cleansed, and even the dead raised back to life! All of these miracles prove the power of Jesus! (Matthew 8:3, 11:5, 12:15 12:22-24, Acts 4:14-16, 5:16 Isaiah 35:5-6).

I can also testify to God’s healing power, because he has healed me, spiritually and physically.  But, I also know that God’s ways are righteous, and healing is not the only path He chooses for us. I know this too, because I suffer from an ailment that is delibating at times, and it has never been healed.  Sometimes His plan for our lives is very different from the one we imagine, and that is where our complete and total trust in God must take hold.  We do not have to understand everything, and dare we even waste time trying!  We must have faith and know that God is in control, and his ways are perfect.  I believe that God allows us to suffer and experience disease, illness, and hard times so that He can teach us through real live experiences, things we would never learn by reading a book or listening to a sermon. When we experience comfort, blessings, and financial prosperity, we are more apt to be at peace, and unknowingly, fail to understand God when hardships present.

In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you. – 1 Thessalonians 5:18 (KJV).

Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ; – Ephesians 5:20 (KJV).

Consider for a moment the many godly people who were sick or suffered throughout the bible. Remember Paul had a problem with his eyes that God never healed (Galatians 4:13).  Paul was afflicted with a thorn in his flesh, and even after fervent prayer, God never removed it (2 Corinthians 12:7-10).  God told Paul that he was better off being sick, because God’s strength is made perfect in our weakness.

And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me- – -2 Corinthians 12:9 (KJV).

Job suffered tremendously and God allowed it, because He had a whole deeper purpose for Job. Deeper than remaining in a comfort zone with wealth and all his needs met. Timothy was sick, and Paul suggested he drink unfermented wine for his stomach, rather than seek a healer (1 Timothy 5:23).  There are many examples, and the point is, the suffering of these godly people were not the result of a lack of faith or sin.

Learning to Be thankful for good and bad

Some of the greatest blessings God has bestowed on me, was in the midst my trials and tribulations.  I can remember thinking God hated me and did not love me, only to learn the opposite was true. He loved me so much, he brought me through and taught me how to serve him, HIS WAY, not mine.  God has molded me, strengthened me, and built me up. But I can tell you, the majority of my growth came through hardships, failures, disasters, and utter sorrow, to the point, I wished I was dead. My true peace and trust came when I finally stopped trying to control things and surrendered to the will of God.  Yes it took faith, and the little that I had, turned out to amplify and grow as my relationship with Jesus did.   I realized that I could do all things through him, and absolutely nothing by myself.

But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us.- 2 Corinthians 4:7 (KJV).

I learned that his grace and mercy was sufficient, and that through the bad and the good, he loved me enough to show me the righteous path.  I made a mess of my life, and I would never want to go back and try it again without JESUS.  I rest everything  in the hands of God, both good and bad, and I am so blessed to be loved and wanted, despite all my failures.  What’s more, when I called out his name, in complete anguish and repentance, I felt the comfort of the Holy Spirit. During a very dark time of my own life, God was with me every step of the way. I don’t always like what I have to go through, but I have learned, to give God thanks for everything, because I trust HIM, completely, with faith overlfowing. I don’t pray for what I want, I just pray for the will of God.

And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose- Romans 8:28 (KJV).

Jesus said that “many will be deceived.” and that the last days will be plagued with deception and “Christian” leaders deceiving others with another gospel.  We are indeed seeing a rise of false doctrines, false teachers, pastors, and authors, who are teaching “doctrines of devils.”  We should not only expect that God’s Word will be replaced by man’s word, but that many will fall away from the true teachings of Jesus Christ (Titus 1:11-14, Isaiah 59:13, Jeremiah 6:13, 1 Timothy 2:12).

Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils – 1 Timothy 4:1 (KJV).

But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction – 2 Peter 2:1 (KJV).

For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables. But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry – 2 Timothy 4:3-5 (KJV).

Whose mouths must be stopped, who subvert whole houses, teaching things which they ought not, for filthy lucre’s sake. One of themselves, even a prophet of their own, said, The Cretians are alway liars, evil beasts, slow bellies. This witness is true. Wherefore rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith; 14) Not giving heed to Jewish fables, and commandments of men, that turn from the truth- Titus 1:11-14 (KJV).

In transgressing and lying against the LORD, and departing away from our God, speaking oppression and revolt, conceiving and uttering from the heart words of falsehood – Isaiah 59:13 (KJV).

For from the least of them even unto the greatest of them every one is given to covetousness; and from the prophet even unto the priest every one dealeth falsely- Jeremiah 6:13 (KJV).

But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence – 1 Timothy 2:12 (KJV).
