When Italian photographer Marco Gaiotti embarked on an Arctic expedition, he didn’t expect to capture this stunning sight.
Gaiotti voyaged to Svalbard, a Norwegian archipelago in the Arctic Ocean, to get a closer look at polar bears, but he was still surprised by what he found.
“I did not expect to encounter so many bears in only two days spent in the ice,” Gaiotti wrote on his Facebook page.
The polar bears in Svalbard were abundant; the real issue, however, was the increased melting of sea ice on the archipelago.
From an ice-pack, polar bears can prey on seals. When the platforms melt, they’re left stranded without a food source, and polar bears in the region rely on fat stores to make it through the melt.
During Gaiotti’s September trip, this process was in full effect, and the impact on the bears was obvious.
“I have seen the effects of long fasting on bears: although nature gave birth to an incredible creature able to survive the harshest conditions on our planet, I believe the survival of this species on high arctic islands is strictly related to sea ice,” Gaiotti said.
All told, Gaiotti witnessed 26 bears during his visit, and he acknowledges the rarity of the landscape.
“I am aware I visited one of the most remote and beautiful habitat of our planet, being conscious that rapid changes are threatening a very fragile balance on which wildlife is based,” Gaiotti said.
