Over 100 neolithic “cult sites” containing sexual carvings, graves and human-like figures, and dating back roughly 8,000 years, have been found in the Eilat Mountains in southern Israel.
The findings, which include a variety of phallic stone structures and artifacts, were found 12 kilometers from the resort city of Eilat, in an area previously thought to contain few prehistoric sites,
Uzi Avner, a desert archaeology expert at the Arava-Dead Sea Science Center who led the team that discovered the sites, said a preliminary interpretation of the objects suggests two symbolic aspects of the objects: fertility and death.
These sites are often clustered together. In one area the team discovered 44 cult sites in a spot encompassing only 0.8 square kilometers (less than 200 acres).
“Taking in[to] consideration the topography, environmental conditions and the small number of known Neolithic habitations in the general southern Negev, the density of cult sites in this region is phenomenal,” the team wrote in an article published recently in the Journal of the Israel Prehistoric Society
In one, a humanlike stone carving was found buried with ‘only the very top visible on the surface.’ Other findings there include standing stones that reach up to 2.6 feet (80 centimeters) high, stone bowls and stone carvings that have a humanlike shape.
Fertility and death
Fertility is represented by “stones with elongated perforation (vulva-shape) and by the very combination of the elongated cell and the circle,” according to the research team, who recently published their findings in the Journal of the Israel Prehistoric Society.
Death is likely signified by the burial of stone objects, set upside down. Among the artifacts, a human-like figure was found nearly entirely buried, with only the top visible on the surface.
According to Avner and his team, similar sites were found in other regions in Israel and in Jordan, leading them to believe they represent a broad phenomenon that offers new insights into desert Neolithic societies and their spiritual culture.
“The combination of fertility and death symbols is typical of ancestral worship in traditional societies,” Avner told the Israeli news site Ynet Wednesday.
“According to ancestral worship, the deceased does not leave the family, but continues to live with them as a spirit – the departed are invited to feasts and celebrations, taking active part in communal life, even after death.”
In addition to the penis-shaped structures, researchers also found that some of the stones have vulva-shaped holes cut into them. The circles that the penis-shaped structures point to also seem to represent females.
“The circle is a female symbol, and the elongated cell is a male one (phallus),” said Uzi Avner, a researcher with the Arava-Dead Sea Science Center and the Arava Institute.
Death is “signified by the burial of stone objects and by setting them upside down,” the team members wrote in their paper. In one case, a humanlike stone carving was found buried “with only the very top visible on the surface.”
The 100 cult sites were found in a mountainous area that receives only 20 mm (0.79 inches) of rain per year, on average, the archaeologists said. “The climate of the 7th-6th millennia B.C. was a little moister than that of the present, 40%-20% more rainfall, but the desert was a desert,” said Avner in the email.
The cult sites tended to be built in relatively flat sections of the mountains. “Their position on topographic ‘shoulders’ or comparatively flat locations probably enabled several dozens of people to gather around them, for example, an extended family,” the archaeologists wrote.
The sites also provide a good view. “Commonly, a broad view is seen from the sites, so possibly, the scenery was one element in the selection of their location,” the archaeologists added.
While the researchers discovered many cult sites, they found few domestic ones. “In contrast to the density of cult sites, only two small habitations and one small campsite were found on the ridge,” they wrote, noting that these three sites were all associated with the cult sites.
‘The fact that they are still visible today, thousands of years after being used, indicates that they were frequently visited, for short events, during a significant period of time and by many people.
‘Since many sites contain several installations (up to eleven) and numerous stone objects, support the view that at least some sites were not just temporary.
More cult sites to discover
Many more sites in the area remain to be surveyed and described in published papers, Avner said. A “survey of a larger area yielded to date 349 cult sites,” he said, adding that researchers are preparing these finds for publication.
The researchers further stated that the large amount of cult sites found suggest many more await discovery on the Negev, southern Jordan and Sinai mountains.

Just before the Israelites were to take possession of the land God promised to Abraham, we learn that “Canaan” was filled with such evil, that God ordered that the people in Canaan be expelled and killed.
7 When the Lord thy God shall bring thee into the land whither thou goest to possess it, and hath cast out many nations before thee, the Hittites, and the Girgashites, and the Amorites, and the Canaanites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites, seven nations greater and mightier than thou;2 And when the Lord thy God shall deliver them before thee; thou shalt smite them, and utterly destroy them; thou shalt make no covenant with them, nor shew mercy unto them:3 Neither shalt thou make marriages with them; thy daughter thou shalt not give unto his son, nor his daughter shalt thou take unto thy son.4 For they will turn away thy son from following me, that they may serve other gods: so will the anger of the Lord be kindled against you, and destroy thee suddenly.5 But thus shall ye deal with them; ye shall destroy their altars, and break down their images, and cut down their groves, and burn their graven images with fire. –Deuteronomy 7:1-5

2 Ye shall utterly destroy all the places, wherein the nations which ye shall possess served their gods, upon the high mountains, and upon the hills, and under every green tree:3 And ye shall overthrow their altars, and break their pillars, and burn their groves with fire; and ye shall hew down the graven images of their gods, and destroy the names of them out of that place.Deuteronomy 12:2-3
While it seems harsh, we must also understand that before this decree came, God gave the people in the land of Canaan 400 years to repent….and they did not
13 And he said unto Abram, Know of a surety that thy seed shall be a stranger in a land that is not theirs, and shall serve them; and they shall afflict them four hundred years;14 And also that nation, whom they shall serve, will I judge: and afterward shall they come out with great substance.15 And thou shalt go to thy fathers in peace; thou shalt be buried in a good old age.16 But in the fourth generation they shall come hither again: for the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet full. -Genesis 15:13-16
What Abominations were so bad that God finally said, expel and kill these evil people:
9 When thou art come into the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee, thou shalt not learn to do after the abominations of those nations.10 There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch.11 Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer.12 For all that do these things are an abomination unto the Lord: and because of these abominations the Lord thy God doth drive them out from before thee. Deuteronomy 18:9-12 (KJV).
This is significant history for us to understand…because not only did the Israelites disobey the warning of God, they also failed to overtake the Canaanites, and instead the evil and darkness overtook the Israelites. From there we read about the expulsion of the Jews, and their exile. We also learn that these “cults” and evil practices continued, and exist even today. Again, not without punishment, Paul tells us and reminds those who have ears to ear:
9 Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind,10 Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God. 1 Corinthians 6:9-10

There is a lengthy biblical history of Negev (known in the bible as Neg’-eb (ha-neghebh, “the negeb” or simply, neghebh, from a root meaning “to be dry,” “parched regions,” “desert,” also nageb) Many events occured in this region:
- An early route from Israel to Egypt went through the Negev (Genesis 12:9, 13:1-3, 46:1-6).
- It was the territory of the Amalekites during the time of Abraham (Genesis 14:7).
- It was in the Negev desert, where God made his covenant of blood with Abraham and sealed it with circumcision
- Hagar and Ishmael were exiled out into the Negev by Sarah (Genesis 21:14).
- Both Isaac and Jacob lived for some time in the Negev (Genesis 24:62, 37:1).
- The Israelites wandered in the Negev during the Wilderness Journey after the Exodus (Numbers 14:44-45).
- At the Division Of The Land, the Negev was allotted to the tribes of Simeon (Joshua 19:1-9) and Judah (Joshua 15:20-31).
- David included the Negev in his kingdom, and when Solomon succeeded his father, he established fortresses in the area.
- After Judah Fell To The Babylonians under King Nebuchadnezzar in 586 B.C., Edom took over the Negev
